Eyesdown is back once again. I've been working on some audio/visual work after being deeply inspired by the whole Brainfeeder vibe and some of the crazy shit I've seen and read in the last year. Atm I'm reading Ray Kurzweil's mad professor pronouncements on human/machine singularity and having my mind blown all over again. Seriously, look it up...

Here I present a bunch of video's I've edited recently under the banner 'Earthlapse'; my slightly crappy title for the most epic subject there is... Anyway I hope you get something from them even if you've seen Planet Earth and think Im a cheeky c*** for jumping on their footage. Well if they didn't want people to remix it, they shouldn't have made it look so damn good!

To give what is basically a non-verbal, loosely narrative film a bit of context I've added a sort of conversation in quotes between people far cleverer than I am and the occasional oddball.

Doureuh! So I just got back from an amazing 4 days at Dour festival in sunny Belgium and thought I'd share some highlights.

First up is Roots Manuva's dub rework of his album 'Run Come Save Me'. Manuva impressively managed to pull of a festival hiphop set without it sounding rehearsed or sing-along whilst keeping the crowd moving. Except clearly being tired of 'Witness' he seemed to be loving his set and kept laughing at the crowd's wack dancing and costumes. This album is not the most obvious choice but it shows off the dubwise heritage of Manuva's sound and is a solid piece of work in it's own right.

To finish, here's a release from Ratatat which is dominated by the 9 minute rework by the Animal Collective. Having bought the hype around 'Merriweather Post Pavillon', I was excited to see hear how the album's acid-folk madness would translate in a live show. I was not disappointed. Starting out slowly with layers of whirling noise which gradually rose and the fell back in on themselves, the set resulted in a noticable section of the crowd falling into a near coma and sitting / lying on the dusty floorboards for most of the set. Bliss.

Finally, here's an older mix from Richards under the name DJ Zilla. I must admit that i only realised the connection between the hard, breakcore edged sound of King Cannibal and the drifting beauty of Zilla's mixing in the process of researching this post. This is only partly down to ignorance however as Zilla's mashed up hiphop sound is a mile away from King Cannibal's menacing basslines.

Zilla's One Foot In The Fire mix has been on my ipod constantly since i discovered it randomly in the blogsphere a couple of years ago. It has been hailed as a rival to Coldcut's legendary '70 minutes of madness' mix and with good reason; just check out the tracklist! The selection is eclectic but not random and each mix is precise and smooth, almost creating the impression of a single, everchanging track. This is what a DJ mix should be. Light one and put this shit on!

This book is a piece of genius, giving a history of hemp as well as fact upon fact about its beneficial uses and the failure of prohibition. Jack calmly spells out the racial basis of prohibiton law ("Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men." Harry Anslinger) and the 'yellow journalism' used to push the 1937 law through the US congress despite the protests of the AMA. You cannot read this book as an educated person without acknowledging the strength of its central arguements.

In it he expains that piracy and bootlegging not only helped to kickstart Punk, Hollywood, Dub Reggae and the USA itself but has a positive effect upon culture by acting as a check upon corporate monopolisation.
